Lucky 8 Roulette, William Hill
Lucky 8 Roulette, William Hill is a massive 51 number roulette based game that pays 48/1 for a straight up win.
The gaming table features numbers from 0 to 49 plus the Lucky 8 bonus position, and allows for a minimum bet of 25p chips, for a £1 minimum per spin. The maximum bet is the usual £100 per spin, or £500 total potential win per number (about £10.50 max. per number).
These games are very old now and have under gone many changes over the years, but they are still popular and can be found on all William Hill FOBT terminals. The current version features a progressive pot that is accessible via the Lucky 8 position on the roulette wheel. Unlike other bonus roulette games such as Key Bet or Hot Shot, you do not need to have a bet on the Lucky 8 slot to gain access to the Lucky 8 feature.
This is not necessarily a good thing as the majority of the time you will win nothing from the feature, so you could place a bet on the Lucky 8 position to cover the zero win from the feature (it pays the same as any other number).

Feature:
The Lucky 8 feature is a progressive pot bonus game that offers a true odds 1 in 8 chance of hitting the progressive pot (that's 1 in 8 plus the 51/1 odds of hitting the bonus position).
The progressive pot reaches a maximum of £350, but it will be extremely rare to see them on this amount. You will be lucky to see them over £100, but that doesn't mean they are not worth playing.

There is also a hidden reserve pot which will replace the visible pot should it be won. If the visible progressive pot is on £350, all of the additional pot money goes in to the reserve, so it could end up being on several hundred pounds replacing the main pot. In the likely even that the pot is not on £350, then the reserve pot will only receive a small percentage of the main accumulation money.
The main pot increases by 2% of the stake with each spin. For example, betting £3 per spin will increase the pot by 6p, £100 will increase the pot by £2.
If you are playing strictly for the progressive pot, then it is advisable to play with a low amount of money per spin (more on that below).

Once the ball lands on the Lucky 8 slot, the top screen becomes animated and a wheel numbered one to eight is displayed. A highlighted area then spins around the wheel several times before slowly coming to a halt. If it lands on the '8' you win the progressive pot, any other number awards nothing and you are returned back to the standard roulette game. |
Odds:
The odds on accessing the Lucky 8 feature are the same as hitting any other number on the roulette wheel. That is 51/1 (0-49 + Lucky 8). So for every 51 spins, in a very long term average, you should be hitting the bonus square once. The odds on winning the progressive jackpot is 51/1 x 8. That is the 51/1 chance of landing on the correct position, plus 8/1 for landing on the position 8 slot. This equals a reasonable amount of 408/1 chance of winning the progressive jackpot. This is still fairly high, but is lower than Key Bet which has overall odds of 456/1. Strategy:
There are many strategies you could adopt to maximise your chances of winning the pot with the least amount of overall stake. The best chances would be with the lower stakes. 25P on a 4/1 split pays £3, so several of these bets across the board could keep you hovering around the break even point for long enough to have a chance at the pot. £2.75 per spin spread out across the board with each bet returning £3 or nothing should be OK to keep you going. Some people prefer a £1 bet spread across 16 numbers, returning £3 or nothing per spin. Whatever you choose, stick to it and don't increase your bets chasing numbers. The minimum pot amount worth playing for is probably around £120, although slightly lower may be worth going for one chance. Above £120 you may want to sit on them until you hit the pot. Addition information:
The betting shops can reset the pots every night if they so wish. This resets them to £0 which is obviously ridiculous and makes them entirely unplayable to anyone. You may also find that locals sit on them when they reach amounts above £40 or so, so again either get to them in the morning, or just don't bother with those ones as the locals will probably sit around and watch and annoy you anyway! |
As soon as you press the bet button, the machine will have decided on the position it is going to land in. The rest is just an animation to keep you amused. The ball will land directly opposite where it starts in the animation.
